There is only one practical way to increase the size of your breasts. Breast augmentation. Since the early 1960s more than 2,000,000 women have increased the size of their breasts through breast augmentation. If you have small, underdeveloped breasts or breasts that have lost size following childbearing, breast augmentation with implants can help. There are
three common techniques: these differ essentially only in where the incision
is placed. One involves an incision on the lower part of the breast, just
above where it touches the chest. Another places the incision around the
areola (the dark pink skin surrounding the nipple). The third places the
incision at the lower edge of the armpit (axilla).
The technique that's used depends on your unique anatomy. Most often, Dr. Lamb selects the axillary approach. After making the incision, a natural space between the pectoralis major and minor muscles is gently developed. Using an endoscope, the pectoralis muscle's lower attachments to the ribs are teased apart. A deflated saline implant shell is then inserted and filled with a closed filling system. When a mild to moderate degree of sag or volume deflation within the breast occurs, a biplanar approach is performed, where the pectoralis muscle is used to provide a dynamic lift of the breast. There are a variety of smooth and surfaced saline-filled, silicone-shell implants; recently, the FDA has approved the insertion of Cohesive Silicone Gel Filled Implants. Some are anatomically shaped, and others are round. Options that will suit your particular need will be shown to you in your consultation with Dr. Lamb. Implant size is selected based upon chest wall width and shape of the native breast. Patients are shown a range of sizers within a bra at consultation. Based upon the individual's desire to be on the small, medium or large end of the spectrum determines ultimate implant size selection and fill volume. The incision will be closed with sutures beneath the surface to result in an imperceptible scar. The procedure takes about one hour. After surgery a support bra will be placed, and sterile dressings will be placed over the incision lines. You will be placed on medications to control any pain or discomfort as well as nausea. Most patients will require narcotic for three to four days following their procedure, but discomfort thereafter will be mild enough for control with minor analgesics such as Tylenol. Some mild swelling and bruising of the breasts will occur but will disappear gradually. You'll be up and around a day or two after surgery, but you should take it easy and avoid any overhead lifting. Your postoperative regimen, which may include breast implant massage, will be discussed with you by Dr. Lamb and his staff. Your incision scar should begin to fade gradually and will become minimally perceptible within four weeks. Most patients have a very natural settling in within a few weeks, though a very subtle maturing will continue for 4 to 6 months. Techniques employed in breast augmentation are designed to minimize the loss of sensitivity in your nipples. Immediately following your surgery you may notice an increase in sensitivity, almost to the point of "ticklishness", or a decreased sensitivity. However, most nipples will regain their preoperative level of erotic sensitivity. After breast augmentation, many women are able to wear clothes they could never fill out before. And sometimes, along with the new figure comes a new attitude. |
