Dr. Lamb sees many patients who experience both physical and psychological issues do to their oversized breasts. Large, oversized breasts can dominate your appearance and make you look top-heavy and overweight. Oversized breasts can also be painful, distort your posture, cause breathing problems, and result in a back or neck pain that is at times unbearable. When you experience these problems, Dr. Lamb may recommend a breast reduction procedure as a way to attain relief.

Though the procedure is permanent, breasts can still increase in size afterwards in the event of weight gain, birth control pills or pregnancy. If you have large, sagging breasts you may be a good candidate. If your breasts are sagging but not overly large, a breast lift may be all you need. Breastfeeding is possible with current methods of breast reduction. Likelihood of successfully breastfeeding following breast reduction averages 80%.

Breast Reduction Consultation

If you think a breast reduction might be needed, Dr. Lamb will begin the process with a comprehensive screening and personal consultation. Make sure to be candid about your expectations and your medical history as this will help Dr. Lamb with his recommendation. Dr. Lamb will explain the factors that will weigh into his decision such as your age, the size and shape of your breasts, and the condition of your skin. While Dr. Lamb believes women of all ages can benefit from a breast reduction, he usually does not perform before the breasts have finished development.

Breast Reduction Procedure

As you prepare for your breast reduction surgery, you should follow all of Dr. Lamb’s preoperative breast reduction instructions to ensure the best outcome. If you have any questions as you prepare for the breast reduction procedure make sure to call the office to get answers.

During the breast reduction procedure, Dr. Lamb will reduce and reshape your large breasts by removing excess skin and underlying tissue. He can also reduce an oversized areola (the dark pink skin around the nipple) at the same time. Excess tissue, both fat and glandular breast tissue as well as excess skin, are removed. The nipple and areola are left attached to underlying breast tissue in a way that preserves their blood supply and often their erotic sensitivity.

When the breasts are extremely oversized, Dr. Lamb sometimes finds it necessary to completely detach the nipple before it is relocated. With the nipple lifted to its new location and excessive skin and breast tissue removed, the incision lines are then carefully closed with a dissolvable suture material placed beneath the skin surface, thereby making suture removal unnecessary. Although scars are present and are permanent, they generally fade within a few months and become less conspicuous. The incision pattern places all incisions within the bra line for concealment within low cut clothing or a swimsuit.

Breast Reduction Post Operative

Any discomfort following breast reduction surgery is rather brief and mild. You'll be prescribed medication to control any discomfort that you have, and you can expect to be up and around in a day or two in a supportive surgical bra. Swelling and bruising are usually mild. Often times a suction drain will be placed which will be removed a day or two following your surgery. Once your suction drain is removed, you will be able to resume showering usually within the third day following surgery.

Dr. Lamb encourages you to review his before and after breast reduction pictures to see examples of his work. He has many more photos in his office and will be glad to review these with you at your consultation.
