CoolSculpting Basics

CoolSculpting vs. Liposuction

The main difference between CoolSculpting and the many forms of liposuction is that the latter is a surgical procedure that comes with all the risks of general surgery, while CoolSculpting is a non-surgical outpatient procedure. CoolSculpting can be cheaper than liposuction and offers a greatly reduced downtime. Liposuction is also more invasive and involves making incisions in the patient to remove the fat, sewing them up, and includes a greater degree of pain for the patient. However, CoolSculpting is only effective for certain types of patients, while liposuction is more beneficial to others.

CoolSculpting is also different from laser and ultrasound assisted liposuction in that these procedures use a laser to contour the body not reduce fat. These types of treatments can be painful for the patient, as well as costly.

CoolSculpting FAQ

How Does CoolSculpting Work?
The technology was developed by ZELTIQ and is the result of a concept known as cryolipolysis.

It is based on the principle that fat cells respond to cooling more than surrounding tissues. The result is a tool that can reduce fat without damaging adjoining cells to produce a natural-looking reduction in fat. These cooled fat cells are crystallized and then die. Over time, the body will naturally process the fat and eliminate the dead cells to leave a more sculpted appearance.

What is CoolSculpting Good for?
CoolSculpting was given an FDA clearance as a medical device for fat reduction in September 2010. The procedure is approved to remove the fat in the following areas that are often trouble areas for most patients seeking fat reduction:

  1. Abdomen
  2. Double Chin
  3. Inner Thighs
  4. Outer Thighs
  5. Flanks, aka love handles
  6. Sides, aka muffin top

CoolSculpting is not recommended for obese patients or those who have a high amount of fat to lose.

What is the Cost?
The cost of CoolSculpting treatments varies depending on what area or areas are being treated and location in the state or nation. Taken as an average, CoolSculpting can range in price anywhere from $750 to $1,475 for an abdominal procedure, around $600 for love handles, and we offer discounts if you have two or more areas done.

What are the Side Effects and Dangers?
The technology has been designated as safe by the FDA for a number of fat removing treatments for the abdomen, hips, thighs, and chin. Its side effects and dangers are minimal but some patients experience temporary numbness, discomfort, tingling, stinging, swelling, bruising, and firmness in the treatment area after the procedure.

How Long Does a CoolSculpting Treatment Last?
With the maintenance of a proper diet and exercise plan, the sculpted results from just one treatment can last for a lifetime. Results from the treatment don’t appear right away, but they can be noticeable in as little as three weeks and will be optimally achieved within six months. This can help determine if a second treatment is needed.
