The double chin, that puffy protrusion of fatty tissue under the jawline, can quickly add years onto the appearance. Also known as submental fat, this pocket of tissue can appear on almost anyone, no matter their body weight. The result of genetics, the normal aging process, and weight fluctuations, a double chin can be notoriously difficult to resolve with diet and exercise alone. Traditionally, liposuction has been the only option for patients looking to regain a youthful chin contour. At Healthy Looks Skin Care and Laser Spa, Dr. Jerome Lamb brings patients a cutting-edge option for fighting unsightly submental fat, without surgery or downtime: Kybella.
The first, and only, injectible treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to eliminate submental fat, Kybella is a one-of-a-kind technique. With no incisions, little chance for complications, and no downtime, Kybella offers patients a chance to see dramatic improvement under chin without surgery.
Kybella is made from Deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule, used by the body to break down unwanted fat. Injected into the target area using a tiny needle, Kybella breaks down the cell walls in fatty tissue below the chin. The damaged cells are then metabolized and eliminated by the body. In the weeks following treatment, the unattractive fat is erased, skin becomes tighter, and the chin takes on a taut, younger look.
The Ideal Candidate for Kybella
Almost anyone looking to improve the appearance of their double chin can benefit from Kybella. Potential patients should be over 18, in overall good health, and have reasonable expectations for their results. Kybella is safe for all skin types and ethnicities, working well for both men and women. Those patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or struggling with an active infection should postpone their Kybella treatment until a later time. Before scheduling a Kybella treatment, a confidential consultation will be arranged with Dr. Lamb. At this time, he will determine if Kybella is right for the individual’s specific situation.
Kybella was approved by the FDA in 2015, after years of clinical trials. Today, it is fast becoming one of the most sought after noninvasive treatments available.
- A nonhuman form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance used by the body to absorb and breakdown dietary fat
- The first and only FDA-approved injectable to reduce submental fat
- Applied through a set of up to 50 tiny injections, during two to six in-office sessions
- Long-lasting; results can be enjoyed for years to come, as the damaged fat cells do not return
- A one-time treatment; once the desired results are achieved, no re-treatment is required
Treatment with Kybella
Kybella sessions are performed in one of Dr. Lamb’s comfortable, private treatment rooms, taking less than 30 minutes. Depending on the individual patient and their desired results, each treatment will consist of up to 50, very small injections, meticulously placed along the predetermined area. To ensure patient comfort, Dr. Lamb will first apply a topical numbing cream or local anesthetic. While patients may note slight pressure during each injection, Kybella is generally well-tolerated.
Between two and six Kybella sessions, spaced a month apart, will be required to achieve the desired results. During the consultation appointment, Dr. Lamb will determine the exact number of treatments required. Additionally, Dr. Lamb may suggest other noninvasive treatments to complement the results from Kybella, including Botox or a soft tissue filler, such as Juvederm or Restylane.
Results from Kybella
No downtime is required after a Kybella session. Recovery will generally take one to two days. Mild swelling, redness, and bruising may initially occur, although these resolve quickly. Patients can return to their normal routine immediately, including work and exercise.
Kybella does not produce immediate results, as it takes several weeks for the fat cells to break down for elimination. Over the next four to eight weeks, the benefits will slowly appear, with the chin becoming smoother and tauter. While most patients can see benefits after only one or two Kybella sessions, optimal results may take several weeks, after the last recommended session, to fully appear. The final benefits of treatment are long-lasting, as the fat cells will not form again, meaning no additional Kybella sessions are required for maintenance.
Approved by the FDA as a safe and effective treatment for reducing submental fat, Kybella’s side-effects are generally mild. Patients may expect some bruising, redness, and tenderness for several days. Serious complications are extremely rare, especially when Kybella is applied by an experienced provider, such as Dr. Lamb. Risks of Kybella are small but can include bleeding, temporary numbness, difficulty swallowing, and asymmetry.
