Botox is currently the #1 non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the world. Here at Healthylooks Medspa, we perform an average of 1,000 Botox treatments each year, making it one of our most popular treatments. So what is Botox and when’s the best time to start?

How Botox Works

Botox treats the muscles in the face, not the skin. The active ingredient in Botox, called Botulinum Toxin Type A, is a muscle relaxer. When we make the same facial expression over and over, like frowning or squinting, we create expression lines that become wrinkles over time. Botox works by relaxing those wrinkle-causing muscles in the face, which ultimately smooths the skin and “erases” the appearance of wrinkles.

Where is Botox Injected

Botox is most commonly injected to smooth wrinkles in the upper face, specifically in the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes. We can also reduce wrinkles in the neck with Botox. Another benefit of Botox is reducing the size of “bulky” muscles. For example, we see patients who want to slim their jawline. Most often these patients are clenchers or have always had strong masseter muscles. Injecting Botox in the masseters weakens that muscle and gives a slimming effect. Lastly, Botox can be injected to help with hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) and to reduce migraines.

How Long Does Botox Last

Botox results set in about 4-14 days after injection. Results last 3-4 months. The injections themselves only take about 15 minutes!

When Should I Start Getting Botox?

Botox is for anyone 18 or older. We see all ages! It’s very normal to notice wrinkles forming in your early twenties, especially if you’re very expressive or frequently squinting in the sun. Both of these actions will cause wrinkles to form at a younger age.

Typically our younger patients notice their wrinkles because their makeup sets in those creases throughout the day. That’s a good indicator that you might benefit from Botox. If you’re curious about Botox, we recommend coming in for a consultation. Keep in mind, we can start conservatively! If you just want to try it in one area of your face, like your frown lines for example, we can start there and gradually inject more when you’re ready.
